England Football World Cup : Related Information

The England national football team represents England in men's international football since the first international match in 1872. It is controlled by The Football Association (FA), the governing body for football in England, which is affiliated with UEFA and comes under the global jurisdiction of world football's governing body FIFA. Also known as The Three Lions, England competes in the three major international tournaments contested by European nations; the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, and the UEFA Nations League. England is one of only eight nations to have been crowned world champions, having won the 1966 edition of the World Cup. Since first entering the tournament in 1950, England has qualified for the FIFA World Cup 15 times. They won the 1966 World Cup when they also hosted the finals and finished fourth in both 1990 and 2018. They did not compete in a World Cup until 1950, in which they were beaten in a 1–0 defeat by the United States, failing to get past the first round in one of the most embarrassing defeats in the team's history. n the 1954 FIFA World Cup, England reached the quarter-finals for the first time and lost 4–2 to reigning champions Uruguay. The 1966 FIFA World Cup was hosted in England and Ramsey guided England to victory with a 4–2 win against West Germany after extra time in the final. England qualified automatically for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico as reigning champions and reached the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by West Germany. England had been 2–0 up but was eventually beaten 3–2 after extra time. They then failed to qualify for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, leading to Ramsey's dismissal by the F.A. The team underperformed and failed to qualify for either UEFA Euro 1976 or the 1978 FIFA World Cup. The team managed to qualify for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain however, despite not losing a game, they were eliminated at the second group stage. They reached the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, losing 2–1 to Argentina. They next achieved their second-best result in the 1990 FIFA World Cup by finishing fourth – losing again to West Germany. The team then failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup after losing a controversial game against the Netherlands in Rotterdam. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup England was eliminated in the second round again by Argentina and again on penalties. England reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. England won all but one of their qualifying games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but at the tournament itself, they were beaten 4–1 by Germany, their heaviest defeat in a World Cup finals tournament match. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, England was eliminated at the group stage for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. England qualified comfortably for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and came second in their group at the tournament. In the semi-final, they were beaten 2–1 in extra time by Croatia.
